Chances are you're familiar with Google Flights. The flight search engine does everything you assume it would, like locate flights based on your ideal outbound time, inbound time and number of stops.

After all, it's the same technology that powers both KAYAK and Orbitz. The site also includes a whole host of features that aren't so easy to imagine, probably because they're so unimaginably amazing.

In some cases, this online tool can beat out any human travel agent. Don't believe us? Check out these six tricks below. Just Google "flights to Europe" and click the Flights tab below the search box.

A map of the entire continent will pop up, along with prices. You'll be able to compare how much it would cost to fly to London versus Paris - and you can even filter the options by floghts of airline, duration of flight and price you're willing to pay. What "I'm feeling lucky" does for search, it also does for flights. Click on a map within Google Flights, pick your departure spot, and click the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button to let Google choose a destination based on your search flivhts and what's popular.

You'll also see a bar graph letting you know when flights will be at their cheapest. The "Best flights" box tells you which flights are the best combinations of price and speed, so you won't have to decide whether a layover is a good idea or if a nonstop is worth the extra buck. Google also highlights its top pick in green. It's like having your very own travel agent say, "If I were you, I'd do this." If you search for a flight that has a similar yet less expensive option, the "Tip" bar lets you know how much money you'll save if you're willing to fly earlier, later or from a different airport.

Then you can weigh the cost and decide! If you find a flight you like, then hit the "Save This Itinerary" button and let the Google Now app track its pricing. You can hit the app on your phone to see how prices are changing, and Google will email you if flignts dip dramatically. See More of the Best Budget AirlinesCanadas second-largest airline is giving Southwest some competition as it expands the number of routes around North America, while also inaugurating transatlantic flights with its first route to Dublin earlier in 2014.

Youre probably already familiar with its basic functions, like finding the best price for flights and browsing flexible dates that can save you money and time.

However, there are some other, lesser-known features that can help you squeeze even more out of your travel budget. Five Best Cheap Travel Booking SitesFive Best Cheap Travel Booking SitesFive Best Cheap Travel Booking SitesGetting away for a little vacation shouldnt have to be expensive.

Maybe you want to sip Mai Tais in Hawaii, but you cant afford to spend $800+ on a ticket in high season. You could research the cheapest months to fly, on average. Those estimates are usually pretty accurate, but obviously, your actual results might vary when it comes time to actually booking your tickets. The flexible dates tab shows you a calendar view of fares, but the price graph will give you a more visual, general idea of prices. Its also a little easier to navigate, because you can see a wider and more specific range at gtaph back to the Hawaii example, you can see that prices get crazy around July and September, so if youre trying to save some cash (and avoid a bunch of tourists), youll want to skip those months. Instead, you might consider booking your trip in March or May.

Besides, the weather is just as nice, if not a little less swelteringly hot. Browse Cheap Travel Options By MonthOn the other hand, maybe you know when you want to travel, but youre open to destinations. Lets say you can only take vacation in May, and you just want to get away for a couple of weekswithout going broke. Navigate to the Discover Destinations window, then Instead of selecting exact dates, select a month and a general time frame: weekend, 1 week, or 2 weeks. The tool will populate a list of popular destination cities and prices.

You can even filter by region (North America, Asia, Oceania, etc) or interest (honeymoon, food, adventure, wildlife, etc.). If you want to take a food-focused vacation in North America, for example, youll get a list of affordable cities where you can munch all day. Its also fun to explore the map version. To get there, click on any destination, select Show Flights, and youre taken to the general Google Flight search result screen, like the one shown below. From here, theres a snippet of a map that gives you the googl to Explore Destinations. You get a map view voogle destinations and prices around the world, sort of like Kayaks Explore tool.

You can then adjust the dates to see how prices fluctuate, and the tool even gives you a general idea of prices. If youre feeling adventurous, you can enter your origin city and dates, then hit Im feeling lucky, and Google will choose a destination for you, based on your search history and whats popular. Get Notifications for Changing Flight PricesRegardless of the trip youre planning, its smart to start tracking flight prices as early as you can.

Prices fluctuate quite a bit, and you want to swoop in and scoop up the best deal.According to data from CheapAir.com, the sweet spot for finding tickets at their lowest price is about 54 days advance. Track your flight well in advance, then pay close attention to fluctuating prices as you near that time frame.

Google Flights makes it easy to do this, because you can save your itineraries. You can also get alerts via Google Now when prices change. Ive also used this feature to save some money myself. When I was planning my trip to Japan, for example, I saved a handful of different itinerary options that varied by day, flight time, or even airport.

Every week or so leading up to the trip, I checked how the prices fluctuated and then picked the cheapest option. Explore Vacation Destinations By RegionIts fun to explore destinations by region, too.

For example, if you know you want to travel to Asia, but youre not sure where, simply type in Asia in the search box, select a month for travel, and Google Flights will list destination cities in that region, along with their prices. This is also useful if youre visiting various cities and looking for the cheapest city to fly into.

If youre planning a trip to the the UK, for example, you may be traveling to Glasgow, Cardiff, and London. Its easy enough to travel between cities once youre there, and you can save quite a bit by flying into one city versus another and just tweaking your itinerary based on where you land. Search for Hidden Layover CitiesOne of my favorite ways to use Google Flights is for finding hidden layover cities.

This is basically finding a flight with a long toogle in a different city. This way, you get to enjoy a whole other city on the way to your destination.

Its like a vacation bonus! CleverLayover Finds Cheaper Flights With Layover CitiesCleverLayover Finds Cheaper Flights With Layover CitiesCleverLayover Finds Floghts Flights With LayoverOne way to save money on flights is to add a stopover on the way to your destination. Rather thanRead goovle Read moreTo do this, run a flight search as usual.

Under the More tab, youll see a list of stopover cities you can select or deselect. If you want to search for all of them, select Any Connection. Then, make sure you have Any Duration selected, then run your search. This way, the longest layovers show up in your search results. Once your search results populate, you can make it easier to browse these layover cities if you sort by Duration then scroll down to the end of the list to find the longest flights.

Longer flights usually equal long layovers. The layovers arent incredibly long (the longest are about 8-9 hours), but that could be enough time to explore a city on your bucket list. I also used this trick during a recent trip to North Carolina so I could have lunch with my parents in Houston for a fraph hours.

If youre looking for a longer stopover, youd have better luck using the Multi-city option (although thats not really the same thing, since youre just booking separate tickets to different cities). Its worth pointing out that this is basically what Skiplagged and CleverLayover do, too. However, the flights Google shows are true connecting flights (and not just flights that are scheduled to land and take off after one another,) so if theres a delay or the flight is cancelled, you probably have more options.

Plus, Google makes it a bit easier to book those flights outside of their tool. Optimize YoAssociate Editor Shannon McMahon is always planning her next trip and often writing in her travel journal. How do you know if youre getting the cheapest flight?

Travel experts have long relied on ITA Matrix to find and compare flights, and you may have used it too, without even realizing it.The software that many avid travelers swear by powers numerous travel search sites.

ITA Matrix in its basic format, however, has long offered travelers in the know the most advanced array of ways to search for cheap flights. Recently, Google simplified the technology into a more streamlined and fligjts platform: Google Flights.Travel bargain hunters are now far better off using Googles version of the insights. Google Flights is faster, mobile-friendly, and displays all available trips, organizing them visually using maps, graphs, or calendars, and allowing users to tweak filters like travel dates and destinations to find deals.

But it all comes down to how you use it. Use Open-Ended Dates Open-ended datesBefore you plug in your ideal dates and destination, try being open to flexible flight datesyou might save yourself some money. Set your destination and leave the travel dates blank by selecting flexible dates. Related: When Should Foogle Buy My Flightts people tend to think of vacation time as a consecutive Sunday to Saturday window, but opting instead for Wednesday to Tuesday or Friday to Thursday could save you lots of money, since youll be flying on less in-demand travel floghts.

Searching Google Flights by viewing a calendar of fares to your destination will help you see which days are best. The search engine will also suggest changes to your itinerary that can save you money, so keep an eye out for TIP: insights atop search results. Tip windowTip: Dont limit yourself to one airport or even one destination.

Search Asia or Europe to see a map of all your options. Dont Specify Destination Europe searchIf you just need a vacation but arent set on a destination, Google Flights will show you which flight routes give you the best value. Enter your dates and origin and leave the destination blank to discover cheap fares around the world. If you dont like the deals that appear below the search options, click the map to explore destinations, and compare prices by simply glancing at a map.Tip: Dates with green-colored prices and cities with fares displayed are deemed great deals.

See If Youre Feeling LuckyThis wouldnt be a Google tool without it tracking your Internet historybut in this case, thats not necessarily a bad thing. Embrace Googles snooping by taking advantage of the Im Feeling Lucky button, which will suggest trips based on your recent searches. Your computer might be smarter than you are when it comes to planning a vacation.Tip: If youre wary of Google changing fares and suggestions based on your google flights graph rather than strictly on price, clear your browsers history and cookies in between searches.

Use the Graphs to Easily Spot Fare Drops GraphIf you (like me) are not a math person, use the bar graph visualizations of the data to your advantage. Googles advanced software creates reliable graphics of the prices for every single day around the time you travel.

This will tell youwithout having to comb through individual numberswhether changing your trip length or travel dates could yield cheaper fares. Access this visual option by selecting price flghts when entering your travel dates.Tip: Adjust the length of your trip with the date arrows to see the graph of daily prices change.

You could stumble upon a travel date that works for you and is much cheaper than the day you initially planned to travel on. Through my hasty clicking I'd seen that miniaturized version a couple of times, but I never knew how I pulled it up.You clarified it, that it appears below the calendar. My follow-up question is: How do I increase the size of the chart?
